This review explores the current research evidence related to clinical outcomes and quality of life following transcatheter aortic valve implantation for severe aortic stenosis.
Why the study?
Does transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) improve clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients with severe aortic stenosis unsuitable for traditional surgery?
Does transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) improve clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients with severe aortic stenosis unsuitable for traditional surgery?
This review explores the clinical outcomes and quality of life effects of TAVI in patients with severe aortic stenosis who are unsuitable for traditional surgery.
Evidence on TAVI outcomes and QoL in inoperable severe AS remains synthesized at low level; leaves open practice change pending higher-quality trials.
Aortic stenosis is a growing health problem in the ageing population of the western world. Large numbers of these patients are deemed unsuitable for traditional aortic valve replacement surgery. It is well documented that severe aortic stenosis has a profound effect on a persons’ quality of life and functional ability. A less invasive treatment for this debilitating condition has been recently introduced;: transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This article explores the current research evidence related to the clinical outcomes following this procedure. As well as easily measurable clinical outcomes, consideration is given to the effect that this procedure has on a patient’s quality of life.

Davies et al. (2009) conducted a review in Severe aortic stenosis. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) was evaluated. This review explores the current research evidence related to clinical outcomes and quality of life following transcatheter aortic valve implantation for severe aortic stenosis.
