Structured PICO

Do multidisciplinary educational meetings improve knowledge about cardiovascular pathology and risk factors in patients admitted for cardiovascular rehabilitation?

P
Population
124 patients (mean age 70 years, 27% female) admitted for cardiovascular rehabilitation, excluding those with severe cognitive deficits, evaluated before and after a 2-week educational program.
I
Intervention
Periodical multidisciplinary educational meetings (cardiologist, psychologist, physiotherapist, nurse) covering cardiovascular anatomy, pathology, therapy, risk factors, and lifestyle, delivered over two weeks.
C
Comparator
Baseline knowledge before the educational meetings (pre-post design).
O
Outcome
Immediate efficacy in improving knowledge about cardiovascular pathology, risk factors, and correct lifestyle, measured by two ad hoc questionnaires.patient reported

Main Result

Absolute Event Rate: 99% vs 81%

p-value: p=0.001

Multidisciplinary educational meetings during cardiovascular rehabilitation significantly improve patients' immediate knowledge of their disease, treatments, and risk factors, regardless of age.

Limitations

  • Efficacy was evaluated immediately after the meetings without long-term follow-up to assess knowledge retention.
  • The educational project did not include long-term reinforcement of the provided information.
  • The ad hoc questionnaires used to assess knowledge require formal validation.
  • Efficacy evaluated immediately after the group or just before discharge without long-term follow-up
  • No long-term reinforcement of the provided information
  • Ad hoc questionnaires used require formal validation

Giobergia et al. (2015) conducted an observational in Cardiovascular disease undergoing rehabilitation (n=124). Multidisciplinary educational meetings vs. Pre-intervention baseline was evaluated on Knowledge of coronary artery function (Questionnaire 1, Question 1) (p=0.001). Multidisciplinary educational meetings significantly improved patients' understanding of coronary artery function from 81% at baseline to 99% post-intervention.
