The ‘‘bipolar spin switch’’ is a novel, three-terminal, ferromagnet-paramagnet-ferromagnet trilayer device. A bilayer embodiment of this device is presented. Spin and charge flow in a ferromagnet-paramagnet model system is discussed and design criteria are developed. Experimental data from a prototype device is qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with the model.
