Growth of Escherichia coli 2000 in a turbidostate is inhibited for several hours after a transient decrease of the pH. This inhibition is not due to a damage of the bacteria by the acidity, but is due to product inhibition by secreted L‐valine. This result contributes to the interpretation of pH‐induced oscillations of growth in continuous cultures.
