Assessed phrenic nerve activity while independently stimulating carotid chemoreceptors with carbon dioxide-saturated saline, baroreceptors via aortic balloon inflation, and cutaneous nociceptors through footpad pinch.
Among 403 neurons tested with all three modalities, chemoreceptor stimulation and nociceptive pinch elicited similar firing rate responses in 52 neurons and opposite responses in 28 neurons.
Chemoreceptor and baroreceptor activation caused concordant primary responses in 45 neurons and discordant responses in 48 neurons, while baroreceptor activation and footpad pinch produced similar responses in 38 neurons and opposite effects in 26 neurons.
Simultaneously recorded neurons exhibited distinct combinations of firing rate responses, demonstrating distributed functional convergence across medullary respiratory networks.
