Does oral salbutamol affect serum potassium and blood sugar in patients treated for premature labour?
Does oral salbutamol affect serum potassium and blood sugar in patients treated for premature labour?
Oral salbutamol used for premature labour causes transient and variable changes in serum potassium and blood sugar that typically resolve within 72 hours.
Case reports suggest transient effects may not warrant extended monitoring; leaves open need for controlled trials before changing preterm labour protocols.
Serum potassium and blood sugar concentrations were measured in six patients treated with oral salbutamol to inhibit premature labour. The fall in serum potassium and rise in blood sugar were variable and not present in every patient. The values returned to the normal range usually within 72 hours of continuous usage of the drug.
