Volatiles from fresh pine wood (Pinus silvestris) generally inhibited the growth of the five wood‐rotting fungi tested, while volatiles from heat‐dried pine wood in some cases were stimulatory. Fomes annosus and Stereum sanguinolentum, exposed to monoterpenes known to be produced from fresh pine wood, were inhibited in their growth, whereas hexanal and α‐pinene +− hexanal, known to be produced from heat‐dried pine wood, stimulated growth of S. sanguinolentum. Effects on mycelial morphology were also observed.
