Summary The inhibitor activity of some 6‐hydroxychromans and 5‐hydroxycoumarans in gasoline and lard was investigated. The coumarans are the more effective in both substrates. Introduction of a tertiary butyl group ortho to the hydroxyl group increases the activity of 2,2‐dimethyl‐5‐hydroxycoumaran in both substrates, but the activity of the 2,2‐dimethyl‐6‐hydroxychromans is increased only in gasoline.
