Archival analysis reveals collaborative unreinforced concrete construction in the former Magome Church, highlighting early localization of Western architectural techniques in Japan.
This study reexamines the former Magome Catholic Church through archival documents and photographs. The church featured paired arches with subsidiary columns and walls of unreinforced concrete using a cement substitute. This method resembles that of the Iojima Lighthouse staff quarters by R. H. Brunton. Construction was directed by carpenter Owatari Isekichi, who had worked on earlier Catholic churches. The study concludes that the church resulted from collaboration between Joseph Marmand, Brunton, and Owatari, marking an early localization of Western architectural technology in Japan.
