Dual Antioxidant Supplementation With N-Acetylcysteine and Taurine (Nefrosave ® ) for Cardio-Renal Protection in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients With Diabetes and/or Hypertension: A Real-World, Retrospective, Comparative Study
Retrospective comparative study demonstrates improved kidney function with N-acetylcysteine and taurine in chronic kidney disease, suggesting a safe, effective nephroprotective therapy.
Key Points
To evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of dual antioxidant therapy combining N-acetylcysteine and taurine in adults with chronic kidney disease and comorbid diabetes or hypertension.
Retrospective multicentric comparative study analyzing electronic medical records of adult patients with stages 1–3 chronic kidney disease treated for 12 ± 2 weeks.
Evaluated N-acetylcysteine (150 mg) plus taurine (500 mg) with standard of care (n = 300) compared against standard of care alone (n = 150).
Mean urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio decreased by 8.61% in the dual antioxidant group (P < 0.001) but increased by 11.26% in the control group (P < 0.001).
Median serum creatinine declined by 0.05 mg/dL in the test group versus an increase of 0.15 mg/dL in controls (both P < 0.001), reflecting a significant between-group eGFR improvement of +6 mL/min/1.73 m² (P < 0.001).
Adverse events were infrequent and mild with no serious events reported across treatment groups.
