Policy analysis reveals socioeconomic and academic disruptions among teacher-trainees and educators, highlighting substantial transitional hurdles despite quality improvement goals.
RESEARCH PAPER Impact of the Restructuring or Possible Discontinuation of Teacher Education Programmes After 2030 on the Lives of Teachers and Teacher-Trainees: A Study in the Context of the National Education Policy 2020 By Dr. Ajay Singh Yadav Principal Teacher Education Institution Abstract Teacher education is one of the most important foundations of any educational system. The quality of school education, professional competence of teachers, development of learners, and overall progress of society depend significantly on the quality of teacher preparation. In India, teacher education has traditionally been offered through programmes such as B.Ed., D.El.Ed., M.Ed., and other teacher-training courses. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has proposed significant reforms in this sector, particularly through multidisciplinary higher education institutions and the development of the four-year Integrated B.Ed. programme. The year 2030 is important in the context of the restructuring of teacher education. If existing teacher education institutions or programmes are discontinued, merged, or transformed into multidisciplinary institutions, the consequences may extend beyond academic programmes. Such changes may affect teacher-trainees, teacher educators, institutional employees, private colleges, local economies, and the overall employment structure of the education sector. This research paper examines the provisions of NEP 2020 related to teacher education and analyses the possible impact of the restructuring or discontinuation of existing teacher education programmes after 2030. The study argues that the purpose of NEP 2020 is not simply to eliminate teacher education programmes but to improve their quality, strengthen multidisciplinary education, enhance professional standards, and develop better-prepared teachers. However, the transition may create academic, professional, economic, social, and psychological challenges for those connected with the existing teacher education system.
