The catalytic effect of vanadium(v) on the oxidation of chromotropic acid by bromate ion was studied with a view to developing a method for the determination of vanadium(v) in atmospheric aerosols. By monitoring the reaction thermometrically and using the initial-rate method, vanadium was determined over a very favourable linear concentration range (0–50 ppb) with a relative standard deviation of 8.9%. The proposed method is interference-free and can readily be used for the determination of vanadium in atmospheric aerosols. The results obtained were compared with those provided by two techniques frequently used for the same purpose: electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry.
