The neutralization test is of interest to the immunologist for the properties of the virus and antibody and their reaction, to the diagnostician for identification of virus and antibody, and to the clinician for interpretation of the pathogenesis of the disease and the immune response of the host. Several reviews and considerations (1,5,15,17,29,36) of virusantibody reactions and their assessment are available for a comprehensive treatise of the neutralization test. The present text is restricted to a brief overview of the principles of the neutralization test pertinent to immunological methods in avian research. Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) will be the model for discussion because of its importance to the poultry industry, its taxonomic position as a coronavirus, and the need for more precise information on the antigenic structure and immunological relationships between isolates of the virus.
