To evaluate the gastrointestinal transit, mucosal colonization, antimicrobial impact, and safety of mixed Lactobacillus probiotic strains in healthy adults.
Thirteen healthy men (median age 25 years) completed a crossover trial receiving three 18-day interventions separated by 17-day washout periods: Preparation A (Lactobacillus rhamnosus 19070-2 and L. reuteri DSM 12246), Preparation B (commercial L. casei subsp. alactus CHCC 3137, L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis CH 2329, and L. rhamnosus GG), and Preparation C (placebo).
Outcomes included gastrointestinal transit time via radio-opaque markers, blood lipids, fecal aerobic and anaerobic cultures, strain typing via restriction enzyme analysis with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (REA-PFGE), and mucosal adhesion via colonic biopsies.
All three preparations were well tolerated, exhibiting no adverse impact on bowel movement frequency, gastrointestinal transit time, or serum lipid levels.
Preparation A significantly decreased fecal Staphylococcus aureus counts from a median of 4.7 log (range 0–8.8) to 3.2 log (range 0–4.6) (p=0.046), whereas Preparation B showed no significant effect on intestinal flora.
Following 10 days of Preparation A ingestion, the specific probiotic strains adhered to the mucosa and were successfully recovered from colonic biopsies in 10 of 11 participants (90.9%), predominantly in the ascending and transverse colon.
