The purpose of this study is to investigate effect of various factors on the desulfurization reaction of high sulfur petroleum coke with hydrogen and to clarify the reaction mechanism. The results are summerized as follows:(1) The sulfur content can be lowered from 7.7%, to about 1% under the following coditions;Reaction temperature 800°CHydrogen pressure 10kg/cm2•GHydrogen flow rate 10l/hrReaction time 2hr(2) The initial reaction rate of coke increased with the decrease in particle size. But the reaction rate for the finer particle size of coke decreased rapidly with the progress of the reaction and no appreciable change in the rate of desulfurization were noticed with respect to particle size after the reaction time of two hours.(3) Sulfur removal was the largest at the reaction temperature of 800°C.(4) Diffusion of hydrogen through gas film boundary layer on the petroleum coke particle was not considered to be the rate controlling resistance.(5) At the initial reaction of hydrogen with the coke, the reaction rate was controlled by the diffusion in the pore of the particle and its effect was pronounced in the case of the larger particle size.(6) With the proceeding of the reaction, the rate controlling resistance shifted from the diffusion in the pore to the surface chemical reaction or the diffusion in the solid phase of coke.
