The emission from an oxide cathode increases as the particle-size of the oxide decreases. It is shown that the smaller particles give a more uniform emitting surface and increase the ratio of emitting to non-emitting areas. The size of the oxide particles is determined by the method of preparation of the carbonates. The carbonate particles generally undergo no change of size in the process of conversion to the oxide state, but the method of preparation can cause particle-growth during conversion.
