Biophysical modeling study reveals quantum spin mechanisms for memory retention across insect metamorphosis, suggesting quantum coherence preserves neural information during extreme histolysis.
The “nanoarchitectonic function” by which holometabolous insects (pupae) orchestrate complex morphological reconstruction without external supervisory signals despite massive histolysis, as well as the trans-metamorphic persistence of larval memory into the adult stage, cannot be fully reconciled through classical molecular diffusion and transcriptional cascades alone. In this paper, we propose a biophysical model positing that within post-mitotic, long-lived neurons, the flavoprotein cryptochrome (CRY) functions as an electron-spin quantum processing unit (QPU) coupled to 31 P nuclear spin memory within Posner molecules. This architecture achieves global optimization of spatial positional information and non-destructive memory retention mediated by quantum coherence under extreme tissue remodeling.
