Theoretical analysis reveals a biological quantum processor model based on phosphorus-31 nuclear spin in cellular systems, suggesting quantum coherence drives metabolic self-organization.
How life was able to overcome the increase of entropy, maintain self-organization, and achieve high-precision metabolic control in the early Earth environment that was warm and wet and filled with thermal noise remains one of the greatest challenges in modern biophysics. In this paper, we propose the hypothesis that the cellular metabolism has a function as an "in vivo quantum computer (Bio-QPU)." We discuss that phosphorus 31P nuclear spin functions as a "quantum memory" protected from external thermal noise during ATP and phosphate metabolism selected by all life's common ancestor (LUCA) as the energy currency, which constituted the hardware of initial quantum computation. Furthermore, we comprehensively examine how the "Primitive Triple Program Structure," evolved from this physical layer, scaled from unicellular metabolic optimization to high-order integration control in multicellular organisms and nervous systems, including morphogenetic fields and quality control by mitophagy.
