Theoretical model reveals quantum annealing algorithms drive cellular differentiation in human development, indicating quantum mechanisms govern morphogenesis.
The differentiation process from a single fertilized egg into the entire repertoire of 270 specialized cell types constituting the human body cannot be fully explained by classical biochemical models, such as morphogen concentration gradients or transcriptional gene regulatory circuits, due to their vulnerability to computational complexity and exponential error accumulation. In this paper, we formulate cell fate determination during embryogenesis as a “QPU-Carpenter Model”. We define DNA and epigenetic modifications as static, discrete information carriers (“Storage: Blueprints and Materials”), while designating 31 P nuclear spin memories in Posner molecules and radical pairs in Cryptochrome (CRY) as the “QPU (Carpenter and Operator)”. At each developmental bifurcation point, the intracellular QPU evaluates the spatial geometric potential across multicellular assemblies in parallel via quantum annealing, steering cells into one of 270 stable eigenstates (energy minima) and thereby achieving flawless three-dimensional morphogenesis.
