We have investigated the L III absorption edges of 80 Hg and 81 Tl in the metals and their respective compounds. It is found that owing to chemical combination the L III absorption edges of 80 Hg and 81 Tl are, in general, shifted towards the high-energy side. A white line at the absorption edge has been detected for HgO, TlBr and Tl(NO 3 ) 3 .
