Percutaneous ultrasound-guided injection of 0.5 ml thrombin successfully treated a rare post-FNAB thyroid pseudoaneurysm, resulting in complete thrombosis and resolution of the hematoma.
Why the study?
Complications of fine-needle aspiration biopsy are rare and usually insignificant, prompting the report of a rare but serious hematoma and pseudoaneurysm complication.

Percutaneous ultrasound-guided thrombin injection is an effective and minimally invasive treatment option for pseudoaneurysms complicating thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
May support thrombin injection for post-FNAB pseudoaneurysms; hypothesis-generating and should not change practice without further evidence.
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is a cheap and effective diagnostic procedure that can be applied directly or with imaging guidance. Complications are rare and mostly insignificant. Here, we report a rare but serious complication related to thyroid FNAB: hematoma and a pseudoaneurysm (PSA) that was managed with percutaneous US-guided thrombin injection.

Saleem et al. (2023) conducted a case report in Thyroid pseudoaneurysm post-FNAB (n=1). Percutaneous US-guided thrombin injection (TISSEEL) was evaluated on Thrombosis of pseudoaneurysm and resolution of hematoma. Percutaneous ultrasound-guided injection of 0.5 ml thrombin successfully treated a rare post-FNAB thyroid pseudoaneurysm, resulting in complete thrombosis and resolution of the hematoma.
