We report the first observation of intermolecular light scattering in a classical liquid: argon. The spectrum is exponential in shape and is four times broader than the collision induced spectrum in gaseous argon for the same temperature and pressure. The spectral lineshape provides direct evidence against the existence of well-defined short wavelength collective modes in liquid argon.
