A variable-mesh finite-element electron gun design code has been developed to simulate hollow beams produced by magnetron injection guns. Very accurate solutions of the self-consistent space charge forces are obtained by using a computations mesh, distorted in a way which allows a high density of mesh points within the hollow beam. A generalized ‘hybrid model’ for cathode emission has been incorporated which combines temperature-limited and space-charge-limited omission in a way justified from empirical and physical arguments. Beam characteristics of a magnetron injection gun are presented as the transition from temperature-limited to space-charge-limited operation is made. Limited comparisons with experimental results are presented.
