The Raman spectra of pure LaNbO4 and LaNbO4:Tb3+ single crystals and powders are compared to the data from measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) times in LaNbO4 single crystals with impurities of rare earth ions (RE3+). Evidence is found that the optical and ‘‘defect'’ lattice vibrations make an effective contribution in SLR processes in the ferroelastic phase of LaNbO4
