Dimethyldioxirane efficiently oxidises tricarbonylchromium(O) complexes of sulfenyl substituted arenes to tricarbonylchromium(O) complexes of sulfinyl substituted arenes: ortho substituted complexes are oxidised with high diastereoselectivity and determination of the relative stereochemistry of the oxidation products by inter alia an X-ray crystal structure analysis of tricarbonyl[η6–1-(tert-butylsulfinyl)-2-methoxybenzene]chromium(0)(2bx) revealed that oxidations of methylsulfenyl and tert-butylsulfenyl substituted complexes proceed to give complementary diastereoisomers.
