The results of ultrasonic irradiation of polystyrene solutions in toluene, benzene and carbon tetrachloride are described. The effect of a range of conditions such as ultrasonic intensity, solution concentration and varying solvents were investigated. The non‐random nature of the degradation process was clearly demonstrated and the effect of different solvents was interpreted in terms of their thermodynamic properties.
