Summary A solution is given for the response of an oscillatory system to a tone whose frequency slowly increases or decreases. The result is of importance in the construction of apparatus to perform frequency analysis. It is shown that the form of the response is very complicated, but that the variation of amplitude near resonance depends upon a single parameter involving the constants of the apparatus. There is an optimum value of this parameter which leads to the highest resolving power of the frequency analyser.
