The acid and pepsin responses to sham feeding were studied in 3 Pavlov pouch dogs in which the gastrin releasing regions had been removed. A threshold dose of gastrin extract or histamine for acid secretion potentiated the acid sham feeding response but did not alter the pepsin sham feeding response. Suprathreshold doses of either agent had an additive effect on the potentiated acid sham feeding response but siynificantly inhibited the pepsin sham freding: response.
