Transmittance of obliquely incident light upon a liquid crystal cell has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. The cell was operated in a tunable birefringence mode of a parallel oriented cell in which a nematic liquid crystal with a positive dielectric anisotropy (Δ ε >0) was utilized. Angular dependence of the transmitted lights by applying 4 V (AC rms, 5 kHz) to the cell was measured. The theoretical light propagation through the cell was calculated by employing the 4 × 4-matrix method by Berreman; and it was compared with the experiments. The agreement between them is shown to be fairly good within the experimental errors.
