Carotid artery resection for head and neck cancer caused cerebral infarction in 13 of 62 patients and yielded a 13% 5-year disease-free survival in squamous cell carcinoma cases.
Carotid artery resection for advanced head and neck cancer carries a high risk of cerebral infarction and poor long-term survival, necessitating careful patient selection.

High stroke risk and poor survival after carotid resection warrant cautious selection; leaves open whether alternatives improve outcomes in advanced head and neck cancer.
