We have experimentally studied the possibility of increasing the working life of explosive-emission cathodes operating at high repetition frequencies (several kilohertz) of nanosecond accelerating voltage pulses. Micrographs of the cathode surface upon training, photographs of the operating cathode, and analyses of the material carried away from the cathode showed that a substantial role in the cathode degradation is played by heating of some regions of the emissive edge up to a temperature of graphite melting.
