Starch microspheres may reduce systemic doxorubicin exposure in hepatic IA rat models; leaves open translation to human therapeutic index.

Johansson et al. (1994) studied this question. Doxorubicin and Spherex (DSM) vs. 6 mg/kg doxorubicin alone was evaluated on Cumulative urinary excretion of intact doxorubicin over 5 days. Concomitant administration of degradable starch microspheres with doxorubicin significantly decreased the 5-day cumulative urinary excretion of intact doxorubicin (73 vs 103 micrograms) in rats.
