Key result
Rotavirus surveillance in Italy identifies G12P[8] as the predominant genotype in ~25% of infected children.
Why the study?
This study aimed to characterise circulating group A rotavirus strains and define genotype circulation trends in the Italian paediatric population during the pre-vaccination era.
Observational (n=2,202)
The G12P[8] genotype emerged as the predominant rotavirus strain in Italy prior to vaccine introduction, highlighting the need for continuous surveillance.

Rotavirus genotype surveillance supports ongoing vaccine impact monitoring; leaves open questions on long-term strain shifts in vaccinated populations.
Ianiro et al. (2019) conducted an observational in Acute gastroenteritis (n=2,202). Group A rotavirus genotypes was evaluated on RVA genotype distribution. Surveillance of 2,202 rotavirus-positive children in Italy revealed an overall predominance of the G12P[8] genotype (24.70%), followed by G9P[8] (24.30%), G1P[8] (20.84%) and G4P[8] (16.85%).
