Improving the specific strength and specific stiffness of automobile body cover is discussed by using plain woven E-glass fabric/epoxy. The mechanical characteristics of composites were determined by tensile and flexural tests in 0°and 45°layup angles. The stacking of laminas was verified, and the stiffness matrixes [Q], ABD, and the effective modulus of each laminates were calculated. Based on selected desirability factors, the 0°layup angle was found proper for the improved body cover. The prototype composite body covers manufactured using hand layup show an increase of 1.8 and 3.4 in specific strength and specific stiffness compared to steel.
