ANP inhibits Ang II-induced hypertrophy in rat smooth muscle cells without reducing protooncogene expression.
The inhibitory effect of ANP on Ang II-induced vascular smooth muscle cell growth in vitro is not mediated through the regulation of c-fos, c-Jun, or Jun-B protooncogene expression.

ANP may inhibit vascular smooth muscle hypertrophy via non-protooncogene pathways in vitro; leaves open relevance to human remodeling or therapy.
Itoh et al. (1991) studied this question. Atrial natriuretic polypeptide (ANP) was evaluated on Protooncogene expression and vascular cell growth. Atrial natriuretic polypeptide inhibited Ang II-induced hypertrophy in rat aortic smooth muscle cells but did not inhibit protooncogene expression, indicating an alternative mechanism of action.
