Does a precordial magnet or VOO reprogramming prevent pacemaker inhibition from unipolar electrosurgical units in pacemaker-dependent patients?
In some pacemakers with high-voltage protection circuits, unipolar ESU can cause temporary pacing failure and asystole that is not prevented by a precordial magnet or VOO reprogramming, necessitating the use of a bipolar ESU or alternative scalpel.
Kleinman et al. (1997) conducted a case report in Pacemaker dependence (n=1). Precordial magnet and pacemaker programmer was evaluated on Pacemaker inhibition and asystole. Electromagnetic interference from a unipolar electrosurgical unit caused total pacemaker inhibition and asystole despite proper placement of a precordial magnet and reprogramming to VOO mode.
