Cross-sectional study finds a 16% uterine fibroid prevalence among women with polycystic ovary syndrome, highlighting intramural lesions as the most common subtype.
Key Points
To evaluate the prevalence and ultrasonographic characteristics of uterine fibroids among women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome undergoing fertility evaluation.
Conducted a cross-sectional study from December 2024 to November 2025 among women presenting for ultrasonography and fertility evaluation at two healthcare centres in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
Evaluated uterine and ovarian morphology to detect uterine fibroids using transvaginal ultrasonography and collected clinical data via structured questionnaires.
Uterine fibroids were detected in 16% of participants, whereas 84% presented without fibroids.
Among participants with fibroids, intramural fibroids were the most prevalent subtype (44.4%), followed by subserosal (27.0%), submucosal (11.0%), and pedunculated (5.6%) lesions.
