Pericardial restraint may limit LV filling only above moderate LVEDP in acute overload; leaves open translation to human diastolic assessment.
The intact pericardium does not affect left ventricular filling at low cardiac volumes, but exerts a significant restraining effect at higher volumes where pericardial pressure closely tracks right ventricular end-diastolic pressure.
Applegate et al. (1992) studied this question. Intact pericardium vs. Removal of the pericardium was evaluated on Pericardial pressure (Pper) and ventricular end-diastolic pressures (EDP). During acute volume loading in dogs, the intact pericardium did not affect LV filling at low volumes, but after pericardial restraint onset, RVEDP and pericardial pressure increased similarly.
