The use of flocculants is essential in solid/liquid separation processes. In many applications inorganic flocculants have been replaced by polymeric ones. For the dewatering of harbor sediments at the METHA plant (Hamburg), for example, a regime consisting of four different synthetic flocculants has been developed. The use of polycations, in particular, poses problems in terms of the biological degradability.
