Key result
High iliac calcium score linked to ~44% greater iliac intima-media thickness and lower LVEF.
Why the study?
Does a high iliac calcium score predict increased severity of peripheral arterial disease and global atherosclerotic burden in patients with symptomatic PAD?
Observational (n=84)
No
Does a high iliac calcium score predict increased severity of peripheral arterial disease and global atherosclerotic burden in patients with symptomatic PAD?
Absolute Event Rate: 1.3% vs 0.9%
p-value: p=<0.0001
High iliac calcium score on CTA is associated with greater PAD severity, increased iliac intima-media thickness, and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction.
Should not yet change PAD evaluation; leaves open whether iliac calcium scoring adds prognostic value beyond IMT and LVEF.

Jeremiás et al. (2018) conducted an observational in symptomatic peripheral arterial disease (n=84). High iliac calcium score (ICS) vs. Low iliac calcium score (ICS) was evaluated on iliac intima-media thickness (i-IMT) (p=<0.0001). High iliac calcium score was associated with significantly higher mean iliac intima-media thickness compared to low score (1.3 vs. 0.9, p<0.0001) and lower left ventricular ejection fraction.
