Postop AF persistence may influence survival after mitral valve surgery; leaves open whether concomitant ablation improves outcomes in observational data.

Does exclusive mitral valve surgery eliminate preoperative atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery?
Absolute Event Rate: 82.9% vs 95.2%
Mitral valve surgery alone does not reliably eliminate preoperative atrial fibrillation, highlighting the potential need for concomitant arrhythmia surgery to reduce AF-related morbidity.
JESSURUN et al. (2000) conducted a cohort in Atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery (n=162). Preoperative atrial fibrillation vs. Preoperative sinus rhythm was evaluated on 4-year Kaplan-Meier survival. Preoperative atrial fibrillation did not determine 4-year survival after mitral valve surgery (82.9% for chronic AF vs 95.2% for sinus rhythm), whereas postoperatively persisting AF did (P=0.05).
