Key result
Menstruating women exhibit lower BP during treadmill stress than ovariectomized women without estrogen replacement.
Why the study?
Do female sex hormones modulate blood pressure and catecholamine responses to dynamic exercise in women?
Observational (n=19)
Do female sex hormones modulate blood pressure and catecholamine responses to dynamic exercise in women?
Female sex hormones may modulate the blood pressure response to dynamic exercise, potentially mediated by circulating catecholamines.

May link menstrual status to lower exercise BP; leaves open estrogen's causal role and should not yet change practice.
Lewandowski et al. (1998) conducted an observational in Normotensive (n=19). Menstrual cycle phases and estrogen replacement vs. Ovariectomized women without estrogen replacement was evaluated on Blood pressure and plasma neuropeptide Y, norepinephrine, and epinephrine concentrations at rest and during exercise. During treadmill stress, blood pressure was significantly lower in menstruating women than in ovariectomized women without estrogen replacement, suggesting female sex hormones modulate BP response.
