Single-dose adjuvanted FMD vaccine induces rapid immunity and protects pigs for ~4 months.
Why the study?

Does a water-in-oil adjuvanted FMD vaccine provide protection against foot and mouth disease in weanling fattening pigs?
A water-in-oil adjuvanted FMD vaccine provides rapid and durable protection against foot and mouth disease in fattening pigs.
Supports single-dose FMD vaccination in swine; leaves open field validation before broader veterinary adoption.
Summary : A water-in-oil adjuvanted FMD vaccine was formulated and tested in weanling fattening pigs. Following inoculation by either the subcutaneous, intramuscular or intraperitoneal routes, the vaccine induced a rapid onset of immunity demonstrable by challenge as early as 7 days post-inoculation. Duration of immunity following a single inoculation at the time of weaning provided protection against chal lenge for at least the duration of the fattening period (4 months). The emulsion has low viscosity and high physical stability (>1 year); potency-stability of at least 8+ months after storage at 4°C was demonstrated by challenge.

Basarab et al. (1982) studied Foot and mouth disease. Water-in-oil adjuvanted FMD vaccine was evaluated on Protection against challenge. A single inoculation of a water-in-oil adjuvanted FMD vaccine in weanling pigs induced rapid immunity by 7 days and provided protection against challenge for at least 4 months.
