Extends rodent NTS pathway mapping to include serotonergic reflexes; leaves open translation to conscious or human cardiovascular control.
Medullary pathways involved in cardiovascular responses to 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptor stimulation in the NTS are similar to those mediating baroreceptor and chemoreceptor reflex responses.
Sévoz‐Couche et al. (1996) studied this question. Microinjection of kynurenic acid (KYN) and 5-HT receptor agonists was evaluated on Cardiovascular responses (hypotension, bradycardia, blood pressure increase). Microinjection of kynurenic acid into the caudal ventrolateral medulla or RVI blocked the cardiovascular responses elicited by 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptor agonists in the nucleus tractus solitarius.
