Combined low-dose IFN-beta and rIFN-gamma synergistically reduces infected cells by ~99% in vitro.
Why the study?
Does the combination of IFN-beta and rIFN-gamma reduce viral titers in coxsackievirus B3-infected human myocardial fibroblasts?
Does the combination of IFN-beta and rIFN-gamma reduce viral titers in coxsackievirus B3-infected human myocardial fibroblasts?
Low-dose combination of IFN-beta and rIFN-gamma synergistically reduces viral titers in coxsackievirus B3-infected myocardial fibroblasts, suggesting a potential treatment strategy for enteroviral heart disease.

May support preclinical testing of IFN combinations in enteroviral myocarditis; leaves open in vivo efficacy and clinical translation.
Heim et al. (1992) studied Coxsackievirus B3-infected carrier cultures of human myocardial fibroblasts. Human interferon-beta (IFN-beta) and human recombinant interferon-gamma (rIFN-gamma) combination vs. Single drugs was evaluated on Viral titers and number of infected cells. Combination of low-dose IFN-beta and rIFN-gamma synergistically reduced mean viral titers from 6.0 x 10(7) to 1.3 x 10(4) pfu/mL and infected cells from 14.4% to 0.1% in vitro.
