Highlights incomplete mitochondrial maturation at term in this model; leaves open translation to human perinatal cardiac function.
Rolph et al. (1982) studied Fetal guinea pig heart development. Fetal development (last third of gestation) vs. Early fetal and adult heart was evaluated on Ultrastructural and enzymatic development. Over the last third of gestation, fetal guinea pig heart myofibrillar content and Ca2+-ATPase activity increased to adult values, while mitochondrial enzyme activities remained incompletely developed.
