Key result
Acute exhaustive exercise in chronic AF is linked to increased fibrinogen and reduced PAI-1.
Why the study?
Does short-term exercise to exhaustion alter the prothrombotic state in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation?
Observational (n=20)
Does short-term exercise to exhaustion alter the prothrombotic state in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation?
p-value: p=0.047
Acute exercise to exhaustion in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation increases plasma fibrinogen and fibrinolytic activity without significantly affecting endothelial dysfunction or platelet activation.

Acute exhaustive exercise may alter hemostatic markers in chronic AF; hypothesis-generating and should not change practice.
Li‐Saw‐Hee et al. (2001) conducted an observational in Chronic atrial fibrillation (n=20). Acute treadmill exercise to exhaustion vs. Pre-exercise baseline and controls in sinus rhythm was evaluated on Plasma fibrinogen, soluble P-selectin, von Willebrand factor, and PAI-1 levels (p=0.047). Acute treadmill exercise to exhaustion in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation significantly increased plasma fibrinogen (p=0.047) and reduced PAI-1 levels (p=0.025).
