It is shown that a two-variable coupled map lattice can reproduce certain dynamical features of oscillatory and excitable reaction-diffusion systems. Many well-known dynamics such as synchronization of spatiotemporal chaos, bistable dynamics, and traveling spatiotemporal patterns are observed in our numerical simulations. The ingredients responsible for the appearance of those phase transitions are analyzed.
