Preoperative depressive tendency and longer postoperative ICU stay are associated with an increased risk of developing delirium after elective cardiovascular surgery.
Should not yet change perioperative care; hypothesis-generating for depression screening and ICU optimization trials after cardiovascular surgery.

Yamashita et al. (2017) conducted an observational in Delirium after cardiovascular surgery (n=88). Length of stay in ICU vs. Shorter ICU stay was evaluated on Development of postoperative delirium (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.21-4.55, p=0.011). Longer length of stay in the ICU (OR 2.35) and higher preoperative depression scores (OR 1.45) were significantly associated with the development of delirium after cardiovascular surgery.
