May warrant caution with oral polio vaccine in immunodeficient children; leaves open optimal immunization strategies for this population.
Case Report (n=1)
This case highlights the risk of vaccine-derived poliovirus infection in immunodeficient individuals and supports the transition from oral to inactivated polio vaccines.
Hidalgo et al. (2003) conducted a case report in Paralytic poliomyelitis and X-linked hypogammaglobulinemia (n=1). Vaccine-derived polio virus (iVDPV) was evaluated on Paralytic poliomyelitis. A 3-year-old Argentinean boy with X-linked hypogammaglobulinemia developed paralytic poliomyelitis caused by a vaccine-derived poliovirus with 97.2% genetic similarity to the Sabin 1 strain.
